It's never done

There's no finish line.

James Carse split games into two kinds. A finite game has rules, an end, and a winner. An infinite game has no end. You play it to keep playing.

Most of what I care about is infinite. The finite games sit inside it. An exam is part of a degree, and a degree is part of learning. Mine led to a master's, which I'm close to finishing, and probably a PhD after that. A song is part of learning the piano. A release is part of a project.

For years I expected to feel done after each one. That never happened, because the bigger game was still going.

The job is not finished. The question now is how far I can go.
